The internet gives us access to a myriad of content and data. We have never collected and published as many data. Data journalism is a flourishing discipline. In a world today undermined by fake news, producing data-based stories has allowed to gives more weight to stories and simplify complex information. But what to do when access to information is not an option and little is online to build fact based stories. Yemen accumulates all the barriers, torn by war, poverty, poor internet, digital divide excluding especially women, difficult transition to digital media, poorly trained journalists etc. But the resilience and determination of Yemeni journalists tell otherwise. The Yemeni data journalism network will explain why data journalism matters, what are the barriers and how are they finding solutions to create, collect and share data. Through a cascade model of “community training of trainers” they have trained hundreds of local journalists in data journalism across the country. Women? How can we ensure women are not forgotten in the digital space and her needs included in the design of programs? We will explore the network “Gender Unit” with Assala “Woman Data Champion” dedicated to provide special support and skills to women to produce data driven content and much more...
