Many for-profit companies have business models based on respecting and enhancing their customers’ privacy. These companies approach their customers’ issues in a variety of ways, including shifting incentives and offering innovative solutions to avoid the business models that depend on making personal data collection or analysis of the product. By focusing on these companies and their alternative business models, we explore the opportunities, challenges and potential outcomes of a future where privacy is part of the product.  Recently, we have seen an increase in the news coverage of the privacy violations of some companies that do not take these efforts to protect personal data, especially in the industries where collecting, analyzing and selling personal data is easier to do because it is digital. As a result, we’re seeing the implementation of personal privacy-protecting moves by individuals and even governments, like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the EU. Our societies, communities, and industries are reevaluating what privacy means and the power of personal data on the balance of persons vs. corporations.
