It’s the business model, stupid! Targeted advertising and human rights

We use internet platforms and services to keep in touch with loved ones, engage in activism, and enjoy endless cat videos - often at little or no cost. In return, they show us ads. Companies can make money by collecting data about us and selling access to our attention through targeted advertising, allowing brands, politicians, and others to use the power of data to influence people’s behavior. But what does this mean for human rights? Researchers from Ranking Digital Rights (RDR) will present findings from ongoing research on human rights harms associated with targeted advertising, including some draft indicators designed to evaluate companies’ disclosures and practices related to targeted advertising, and seek input on next steps. How should the questions we ask and the research methods we use to answer those questions be fine-tuned to help companies improve? What sort of data is most useful for advocacy? What type of advocacy is most effective for fostering greater corporate respect for human rights in the context of companies’ business models? RightsCon attendees will help us create the roadmap.
