Moving Beyond the Problem: Pathways to meaningful consent online

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Skepticism abounds about the instruments and policies deployed in managing consent online, despite increasing ambitions in data protection policies to use consent as a tool for giving individuals more control. It is increasingly becoming an empty formality, which can cause personal damage to individuals and communities. These problems do not simply call for more rigor in regulation: they also require probing into the fundamentals of consent as a legitimate, if often abused, tool. This session will probe in this direction. Together with the audience, it will explore new ways of thinking about the problem, and consider different experimental solutions, thereby raising awareness of the issues and creating practical takeaways. Using Slido this session will not only allow traditional interventions but also encourage interactive participation through polls and questions to shape the discussions in this workshop. The benefit of this is that everyone has the opportunity to voice their opinion and shape the conversation that takes place.
