My research focuses on the role of the US state and non-state actors in the promotion of democracy, and how this links to geopolitical objectives. I have published on the establishment of the National Endowment for Democracy and American democracy promotion under the Reagan Administration. My current project examines why the US has promoted political reform in allied authoritarian states, with a focus on Latin America and East Asia during the 1980s and Egypt during the 2000s. My expertise is in: US Foreign Policy; Democracy Promotion; the role of the state and non-state actors in foreign policy; and political warfare.
